June is National Blueberries Month! We know what you’re thinking, “Blueberries? Really? They’re good and all, but are they really that important that there should be a month honoring them?” Yes, and you’d be surprised to know why.

Blueberries provide a lot more nutrients than they are given credit for. In the berry world, they are often hurriedly overlooked for the more popular straw-, black-, and ras- counterparts. This is one of the great mistakes of mankind. Blueberries are the best, here’s why:

1)     Antioxidants - Blueberries bring you more antioxidants than any other fruit. Antioxidants are known for their ability to inhibit the oxidation of molecules in the body. Oxidization has the potential to mutate or kill your cells. If allowed to continue, this mutilation can lead to serious health problems. Antioxidants stop this from happening. You want these, and blueberries give you the most. A cup gets you close to 15% of your daily recommended value.

2)     Low in calories: Eating a bunch of these won’t put you over on your daily calorie intake. One cup will get you less than 100. That’s better than some of the health bars you eat, plus you get close to 15% of your daily antioxidants!

3)     Phytochemicals (you knew a scientific term you’ve never heard of was on its way): Phytochemicals are plant chemicals that have protective and/or disease preventative properties. Antioxidants are one of them. Blueberries contain a host of other phytochemicals for your use as well.

4)     Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins given include K (normal blood clotting) and C (a host of benefits including lower blood pressure, healthy teeth and gums, better iron absorption, etc.). Minerals given include Manganese (helps to maintain normal blood sugar, nerves, synthesize fatty acids and cholesterol, etc.)
