Taking good care of your teeth and gums is one of the easiest ways to protect your overall health. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Keep Up Those Daily Habits

Little daily habits are the most important part of dental care.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Use toothpaste with fluoride, hold your toothbrush at an angle, and don’t forget to clean your tongue. For best results, consider getting an electric or battery powered toothbrush, and replace your toothbrush or the head of your electric toothbrush every three months.

Floss once a day. Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth, but many people don’t make time for it. Your toothbrush simply can't remove everything between your teeth. To make flossing easier, look for a wooden or plastic flossing pick.

2. Avoid Problem Foods

Sticky foods and sugary beverages are bad for your teeth. Avoid hard candy, soda, and other foods that are high in sugar. If you do eat something sticky or sugary, rinse your mouth out with water immediately after eating to prevent the sugar from sticking to your teeth and causing damage and plaque build up.

3. Get The Right Nutrients

Calcium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin C are all part of keeping your mouth healthy. Eating and drinking the right foods and beverages will help you protect your oral health. Good options include:

 

  •          Milk, yogurt, and other dairy products
  •          Leafy greens like kale and spinach
  •          Carrots, celery and other crunchy vegetables
  •          Citrus foods in small amounts such as oranges and grapefruit
  •          Apples, watermelon, and other fruits with high water content

 

4. Help Your Body Do What It Does Best

Your body is pretty good at protecting itself. Saliva is designed to kill bacteria and keep your mouth clean. To help your mouth produce saliva, stay hydrated, and eat healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables and other tart foods like cherries.

You should also wait about 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. This gives your mouth time to produce saliva and clean itself.

5. See Your Dentist Regularly
