3 Considerations for Your Motorcycle Insurance this Summer

With summer approaching, you’re probably eager to get your motorcycle out and on the road again. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being in the open air on your bike, cruising along a scenic highway in total control of your every move. But you’re not the only motorcyclist excited to hit the road, and with the rise of motorists out it’s important to make sure you have the protection you need in case any of your rides don’t go according to plan.

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind this summer as you review your motorcycle insurance policy and your coverage.

Roadside Assistance

When the sun stays in the sky longer and the air stays warm even into the night, taking a road trip on your motorcycle probably sounds like the perfect way to kick off your summer. Before you head off to see the country, make sure you’re prepared for any unexpected breakdowns or problems that could occur.

When you’re far from home, it’s not always easy to call a ride or book a last minute hotel. If you add roadside assistance to your insurance policy, you can have towing, minor repairs, fuel delivery, rental coverage, trailer coverage, and even food and lodging costs covered if you break down far from home. Of course, nobody ever plans for a breakdown or to run out of gas, but having the peace of mind that you won’t be stranded in the middle of nowhere can take the stress and anxiety out of planning your road trip.

Uninsured Coverage

Part of the fun of buying and riding a motorcycle is meeting up with other riders. But chances are, some of those other riders may not have adequate insurance (or any at all). It’s not an uncommon occurrence for friends or family members to take joy rides on someone else’s motorcycle, with or without the owner's knowledge. This means you could be in the company of very dangerous riders, and it would be wise to add uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage to your policy. An accident involving these motorists could be catastrophic if they aren’t properly covered and your coverage is limited, so protect yourself and your passengers from those without proper coverage.

Comprehensive Insurance

Summer weather can also create some hazards otherwise not relevant to your motorcycle. If you live in an area prone to fires or flooding, comprehensive coverage can cover damages to your motorcycle if it is affected. Comprehensive insurance also provides coverage for vandalism, theft, and animal collisions, which can all be more prevalent during the summer when you’re more likely to leave your bike out, or drive during the evening when animals tend to roam.

When you take out your motorcycle this summer, just remember to plan for adventure, but be prepared for anything. For more information on motorcycle insurance and how to add protection for your summer riding, contact the professionals at Insurance Center Associates.
