How do you celebrate your Independence Day? My family prefers to gather around the television for our annual viewing of the film “Independence Day,” starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and our favorite fictional President, Bill Pullman. This is fairly safe, but not every Fourth of July activity is. Here’s how to stay safe while enjoying fireworks and grilling.
Prevent unnecessary injuries this year with these few tips. Just as you would have a designated driver when you drink, have a designated firework-lighter that will not drink that night. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix, nor do children and fireworks. Do not let young children handle fireworks. Also, do not attempt to relight “dud” fireworks. Wait 10-15 minutes, douse them in water, and throw them away.
Find an open space to grill outside, and do not attempt to grill underneath any kind of roof. Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies. Know how your grill works – whether you’re using charcoal or a gas line, use precautionary measures. For example, use as little lighter fluid as possible with charcoal, and check your gas lines for any cracks.
Of course, be sure to adhere to any local laws in your area when it comes to purchasing and using fireworks, as well as keeping children away from grills. If you can follow these basic safety guidelines, you will be able to enjoy a fun and safe Independence Day with your family and friends!
